Thomas awakens in an elevator, his memories of the past completely gone. He emerges into a world where there are about thirty teenage boys, all without past memories. They have learned to survive under their own set of rules in a completely enclosed environment that they call "The Glade". This is a place where they subsist on their own agriculture and supplies.
With a new boy arriving every thirty days, the group has been living in The Glade for three years now. Their main objective is to find a way to escape through the Maze that surrounds their living space. To do this, they must navigate their way through a series of challenges that are patrolled by cyborg monsters called "Grievers".
Despite their best efforts, the boys begin to lose hope as they are unable to find any way out of the Maze. However, things take a turn when a comatose girl arrives with a strange note. She seems to be aware of the situation the boys are in, and she offers them a chance to escape.
At first, the boys refuse to consider her offer, but as time goes on, they begin to change their minds. They start to divide themselves into two factions; one willing to risk their lives to escape and the other wanting to hang onto what they've got and survive.
As the story progresses, we learn more about The Glade and its inhabitants, as well as the struggles that the boys face as they try to find a way out of the Maze. We also discover more about the mysterious girl who arrived with the strange note and how she plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of The Glade.
