willingness to extend kindness to strangers is a trait of ordinary people around the world. This empathy towards others is perhaps fueled by the fact that most everyone has experienced being lost, hungry, in pain, confused, or simply caught in the rain at some point in their lives. Empathetic strangers often come to the rescue, knowing what trouble feels like and offering assistance.
In China, this attribute seems particularly pronounced, as I have personally been the beneficiary of such kindness. For example, while walking in Beijing one day, a major cloudburst opened up. The rain was so heavy that it was described as "raining whales and elephants". A kind stranger saw my distress and quickly invited me into his covered porch, where he offered me a cup of tea and his own chair.
Another example occurred when I was caught in a sudden downpour while traveling. A passerby noticed my predicament and took me to a nearby shop where I could take shelter and change into dry clothes. Despite not knowing me at all, they were more than happy to help in any way they could.
These examples demonstrate the importance of kindness towards strangers and the impact it can have on someone's day. In a world where we often focus on our own lives and problems, small acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of others and create a more compassionate and connected society.

Such deeds inspire me. Since I cannot pay back, I have vowed to pay forward when opportunities arise, and I invite you to join me. Try this: Every time a stranger helps you, return the favor by helping two other people. A wave of goodwill will roll forward exponentially.

At home, I have a small ceramic plaque that was sent to me by my mother. The inscription states a great truth: “There’s no such thing as a small act of kindness.”
