Ruth McGraw (Kathy Baker) is a 54-year-old woman who lives alone with her two cats. She works at a local hotel and has been married once before, to Wes Handrick, who died three years ago in an auto accident while drunk driving on the open road in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, after they had an argument about his excessive drinking. Ruth's current boyfriend is Cooper Dobler (Liam Boles), but she is having doubts about their relationship.
Kelly Meyers (Vinessa Shaw) is a young woman who works as a maid at a local luxury hotel. She is engaged to her fiancĂŠ， Lloyd Dobler (Tim Palmer), who owns the hotel. Kelly has never met Ruth and wonders if her fiancĂŠ is cheating on her.
Shayna Dobler (Maeve Blake) is the daughter of Colonel ScOTT Boyer (Dermot Mulroney) and wife Darcy (Opal Sidon). Shayna is currently attending university and has been living with her father since her mother died from cancer. She has feelings for her friend Rich (Jason Arthur Martin), who is also engaged to Ruth's daughter Kelly.
Diane Dobler (Krista Schwarting) is the mother of Kelly Meyers character, as well as Ruth McGraw's daughter. Diane is an alcoholic and has been using drugs to cope with grief over the death of her husband, which led to her separation from Wes Handrick.
Darcy (Opal Sidon) is a wealthy socialite who owns a large estate in the area. She is engaged to Rich, but he does not share her wealth or social status.
Wes Handrick (John Michael Higgins) is Ruth's deceased former husband. He was a heavy drinker and caused problems in their marriage by driving drunk and causing accidents. Wes was killed in an auto accident while driving drunk in Prudhoe Bay, leaving Ruth heartbroken.
General Stanton (Gregory Jbara) is a military official who oversees operations in the region. General Stanton offers to help with the search for Wes Handrick's body in the lake, but Ruth declines.
Rich (Jason Martin) is a successful businessman who owns several businesses in the area. He and his wife are currently engaged to Kelly.
Prudhoe Bay Reporter #1 (Jessica Tiihonen) is a local journalist who covers news stories in the area. She is investigating possible ties between Wes Handrick's death and the oil spill that occurred during his last visit to Prudhoe Bay.
Chief of Staff (Bruce Altman) is responsible for coordinating government resources in case of emergencies such as oil spills. He offers his support to Kelly and Rich's families as they deal with the aftermath of Wes Handrick's death and the ongoing oil spill.
National Guard Co-Pilot (Anthony Fryer) flies alongside Chief of Staff aboard Air Force One during a state visit by President Andrew Stanton (George Dzundza). National Guard Co-Pilot meets with General Stanton and discusses his concerns about the safety of flying during an oil spill.

亚当发现了这个新闻源后，决定要把这件事报道出去。他的报道文章迅速成为了全美国热议的话题。从总统到普通人家、从石油大亨到蜂拥而至的记者，每个人都对这个突发事件倍感兴趣。其中最关心灰鲸鱼和亚当的是一个叫做瑞秋·卡尔莫的环保主义者，她曾经是卡尔森的女友。
随着时间的流逝，卡尔森找到了当地的因纽特人、当地的石油工人以及俄罗斯和美国的军队帮忙。他们在冰面上凿开了一个接着一个的呼吸口，引领着鲸鱼朝大海方向前进。为了这巨大的生物，所有人团结在了一起，卡尔森渐渐忘记了要去大城市的梦想，而美国和苏联的军人们似乎也忘记了这两个国家之间的龋龉和冷战。在那一刻，人类似乎就是为了创造奇迹而活着......
幕后制作：破冰行动
影片的故事并不是好莱坞编导们的虚构，而是来源于真实的历史事件。当时是1988年的10月7日，一个叫做Roy Ahmaogak因纽特族猎人在波弗特海的冰面上发现了三只被困在这里的灰鲸鱼。为了能让这三只灰鲸鱼重回海洋，这个纽特族猎人希望自己用链锯在冰面上锯出了一条通向海洋的通道。整个村庄的人都被叫来帮忙，甚至连周边的工厂里的工人和学校里的学生也都来营救灰鲸鱼。冰层在一点一点地加厚，用电锯是不可能的，所以当地的剧名找来了“空中吊车”，希望能用一个5吨重的锤子砸开冰面，可是收效甚微。
关于鲸鱼被困的第一则新闻报道在当年的10月14日被当地的一家报社报道。随后全美国的电视台几乎都跑到了阿拉斯加这个几乎被人所遗忘的小镇来“观赏”被困的鲸鱼。随着天气的转寒，当地的居民在媒体、政府以及财团的帮助下，向美国国务院求助。在政府的帮助下，他们从苏联的军方借出来了两条破冰船：Vladimir Arseniev 和Admiral Makarov——那个时候，苏联并未解体，美苏尚在冷战之中。
在被困期间，因纽特人为这三条鲸鱼起了因纽特语的名字：Putu、Siku和Kanik。在英文中，它们被叫做波奈特、克罗斯比克和波恩。虽然有着人们的通力合作，但是事情进展得并不顺利，一条只有9个月大的小鲸鱼被破冰船撞到了，并在10月21日死亡。10月28日，破冰船切开了一条30英尺宽，400码长的通道(约9.1米宽，365.8米长),成功地引领另外的两头灰鲸鱼回到海洋。据统计，这次营救花费了100万美元。虽然拯救了灰鲸鱼的生命，但是因为人类对自然环境的干预，还是遭到了一些科学家的批评。
这部电影取材于真实事件，虽然在故事情节上有夸张的成分，但仍被认为是一部故事片。影片的制片人斯图尔特·M·贝瑟表示：“这并非纪录片，所以我们不会以历史和史实的角度来拍摄。我们会加入一个感人的爱情故事元素以及一些关于历史的细节，改编是创作过程中的一种常见手法。”
德鲁·巴里摩尔对这个故事和影片发表了看法，他说：“能够参与拍摄这部电影是我的荣幸，因为我曾经亲身经历过这件事情，它给我留下了深刻的印象。我认为这不仅是自然界的奇迹，更是人类历史上的奇迹。在冷战时期，美苏两国领导人竟然为了拯救三只鲸鱼的生命而坐在一起进行协商，这实在是太难以置信了。我在影片中扮演的角色是一个绿色和平组织的环保主义者，她对鲸鱼和环境的关注远远超过了普通人和记者。可以说这是一个具有理想主义特色和完美倾向的角色。我非常喜欢这个角色。”
为了表现出现场感和历史感，剧组特意在秋末来到了当年灰鲸鱼搁浅的地点拍摄影片。阿拉斯加当地的气温此时已经降至零下十多度，而拍摄地点离剧组驻地相当遥远，因此剧组成员每天需要早早起床，徒步走到拍摄点。导演肯·卡皮斯说：“我们大约每天早上2点到2点半之间起床，整理装备，然后走到拍摄地点开始一整天的拍摄。由于室外非常寒冷，所以我们的工作时间并不算太长。这要求所有工作人员，包括演员都要做好充分的准备。尽管拍摄过程艰辛，但我们还是很开心，因为能用自己的镜头和影片还原历史上这件具有重要意义的事情，感到非常荣幸。”
困难的拍摄和艰苦的创作其实并不是最大的挑战，最困难的是在影片中传达出对生命的尊重与情感。巴里摩尔说：“对我来说，在影片中最打动人心的还是那种对生命和自然的尊重。既然为了拯救灰鲸鱼能让美苏两国的领导人携手合作，那么人类还有什么隔阂是无法消除的呢？在电影中，我有一个前男友，他负责报道拯救灰鲸鱼的事情，后来我回到了小镇和他重归于好。在更大的主题面前，人类的爱情其实算不上什么大事。”
幕后花絮
1. 影片改编自1989年托马斯·罗斯的报告文学作品《拯救鲸鱼：媒体如何创造奇迹》(Freeing the Whales: How the Media Created the Worlds Greatest Non-Event)。
2. 《巨大奇迹》原本的名字是《人人都爱鲸鱼》(Everybody Loves Whales),后来才改成现在的名字。
当年，拯救鲸鱼的行动成为了美国总统里根和苏联领导人戈尔巴乔夫会面并携手作战的重要契机。这一历史性时刻吸引了数以亿计的观众通过电视观看。影片《拯救大鲸》在阿拉斯加的安克雷奇拍摄，这里正是当年三条灰鲸鱼被困的地方。为了呈现最大的场面，剧组还雇佣了1000多名临时演员。
