Since his birth, Mara has raised Kell in a safe place away from other whales.

The once peaceful singers battled violently for supremacy, pushing each other out of the way in an attempt to get closer to Mara. Kell watched from a distance, unsure of what to do. This was the final lesson he must learn if he was to father his own young: he would have to become a fighter.
His first chance to mate may not come for another twelve years, when he is fully grown. Only size will give him the strength to push rivals away. The battles between the males lasted for hours. They were immense tests of strength. And then, with Mara in front and his rivals falling behind, the closest male had one final trick. He blew a curtain of bubbles, stretching the length of the sea to screen Mara from the other males.
With this distraction gone, Kell finally had a chance to claim his prize. He rushed forward and struck Mara with all his might. She screamed in pain as she struggled against him, but eventually gave up and swam away. Kell lay on the ground, panting heavily, knowing that he had won the battle for Mara's love but lost the war for respect among the other males. It would take him many more years to gain their acceptance, but he knew that he would never give up his quest for Mara's affection.
