On a rainy night, Rey (John Getz) and Abby (Frances McDormand) meet at a hotel. Ray, the bartender, is also present, and Abby happens to be the wife of Bar Owner Maddie (Dan Hedaya). Maddie has suspected her wife of cheating and has hired Detective Weiss (Brad Pitt) to investigate. When he uncovers the truth, Maddie is so angry that she sneaks into Ray's house and tries to kidnap his wife.
Maddie meets with Weiss and decides to use the money to get rid of them. She sneaks into Ray's house and finds Abby's pistol. After returning home, Weiss shows Maddie pictures of the two men being killed and takes advantage of Maddie's surprise by shooting her dead.
Ray finds Maddie's body and mistakenly believes that Abby is responsible for the crime, so he destroys the body of thetrace. In the evening, Rey returns to the bar and discovers Weiss's fake photo. Neither Ray nor Abby knows that they are still under threat of death.
