The band Train, which was formed in San Francisco in 1994, started as a duo with Patrick Monahan and Rob Hotchkiss. It all began when Monahan left his hometown of Erie, Pennsylvania, in late 1993 to join the Los Angeles band, the Apostles. By this time, Jim Stafford, the other guitarist and lead vocalist of the Apostles, had already disbanded his group.
Fortunately, Monahan's arrival in L.A. proved to be a lucky break for him, as Hotchkiss extended an invitation to Monahan to join his two-man band. The duo made their debut at low-key coffeehouses before deciding to form a full band. In order to do so, they recruited former Apostles member Scott Underwood, who brought along his good friend Charlie Colin, to fill the bass guitar position. With these new members on board, Train was ready to take the world by storm.
Train settled in San Francisco to develop their sound and were able to work in a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. In 1997, they opened for the likes of Blues Traveler, Barenaked Ladies, and Counting Crows on tour. They knew they had arrived when they sold out a performance at San Francisco's prestigious Fillmore venue. The following year, Train released their completed debut album which was well received by audiences and critics alike.
Three years later, in 2000, Train released their second full-length album Drops of Jupiter. It became a platinum hit on the back of its single of the same name. In 2003, Train released another album called My Private Nation. Though response was initially slow, the single "Get to Me" eventually caught fire and Train had their latest Billboard chart hit. A live album appeared in 2004 while the band returned to the studio to record My Private Nation's follow-up.
The single "Cab" announced the band's return in late 2005 with the full-length album For Me It's You following early next year.
