minem might have been stunned when he learned who would win the major awards at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. Though he was nominated for record, song and album of the year, along with several others, he ended up winning just two: best album and solo performance in the rap categories. It was his third straight defeat in that category despite a critically acclaimed release that marked his return to prominence after a long absence from the spotlight.

The surprise winner came as no surprise to some though since Arcade Fire's album "The Suburbs" dominated many critics' best-of lists for 2010. What did come as a shock was Esperanza Spalding — a jazz bassist and singer who may not be as famous as Justin Bieber but is perhaps best known for her voluminous Afro — beating out Justin Bieber, Florence & The Machine, Mumford & Sons, and Drake for the top new artist award. She is also the first jazz artist to ever win the award.

palding, the Canadian pianist and actress, was overwhelmed with emotions when she heard that she had won the award. "I take this honor to heart so sincerely and I'll do my damnedest to make great music for all of you. It's such an honor and God bless," she said in a statement. Spalding released her third album, "The Chamber Music Society," last year.

Bieber-nation was outraged when they learned that Spalding had won the award over him. However, Bieber remained cheerful backstage after the loss. He was perhaps comforted by the fact that he has sold millions of albums and owns the nation's No. 2 movie with his documentary "Never Say Never."

In a interview with Reuters, Bieber expressed his happiness for Spalding. "I'm really happy for her and I had a great night," he said. "We performed, I got to perform with my mentor which is amazing. I'm really happy for her and hopefully she has a good year."

Bieber also playedfully jumped on Usher in the press room. He continued, "We had a great time tonight and it's funny because I saw her at the Grammys last year and I was like 'Oh no!' But now it's cool because we get to be on stage together.

Grammy Awards 2013: The night's biggest winners included Jay-Z, who won record of the year and album of the year along with three other trophies. John Legend also won three awards for song of the year, record of the year and best R&B performance. Lady Gaga had three wins including best pop performance for her hit "Just Dance" with will.i.am. And Muse won album of the year for "Up All Night."

Lady Antebellum were also a big winner this year, taking home three awards to go along with their win last year. The band was the top story at the Grammys for the second straight year as country crossover acts continue to dominate the show. Last year, Taylor Swift was named album of the year and won best country album and best female artist. She also picked up three other awards that night.

The Recording Academy gave out 109 awards across all four categories (record, song, album and performance). Most of those awards were given out before the live telecast on CBS Sunday night. The ceremony focused mostly on performances from artists like Eminem, Bruno Mars, Beyonce, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Adele, along with emerging acts and true legends like Bob Dylan and Paul Simon.

Lady Gaga entered the Staples Center, where the Grammys were being held, in a dramatic fashion. She was encased in an egg and carried by several dancers to the stage. When she "hatched," it was clear that she had taken inspiration from Madonna circa 1987, as she sauntered across the stage to perform her new song, "Born This Way." However, this year's Grammy Awards ceremony proved to be a different story for Lady Gaga.

In previous years, Lady Gaga has been known for her outrageous performances that have left many audience members in awe. However, this year, the singer was out-Gaga'ed by Cee Lo Green, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jim Henson Co.'s puppets who gave a hilarious performance of "Forget You." The puppets brought back memories of Elton John and his iconic performances at the Grammy Awards, making them a hit with the crowd.

It is clear that Lady Gaga still managed to entertain the audience with her own performance of "Born This Way," but it was Cee Lo Green, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jim Henson Co.'s puppets who stole the show this year. While Lady Gaga may have been disappointed with not being able to take home the top prize, her fans were certainly entertained by the hilarious performance of "Forget You" and the return of Elton John's beloved puppets.

Green, decked out in feathers of seemingly every hue, crooned alongside a sassy gaggle of puppets and Paltrow at the Oscars. The actress was nominated for record and song of the year for the dirty version of "(Expletive) You" and recently played a singer in the movie "Country Song". She is slated to sing on the Oscars telecast, perhaps giving her some serious consideration about joining hubby Chris Martin of Coldplay as a regular recording artist.

The performance was easily the showstopper in a night that included a tribute to Aretha Franklin, a retro performance from Bruno Mars, a dazzling number by newcomer Janelle Monae that was James Brown-esque, a collaboration with Mumford & Sons, the Avett Brothers and a very raspy Bob Dylan.
