The New Year's Concert live from Vienna is one of the world's most famous and spectacular classical music events. It has been broadcast on TV and radio in almost 80 countries with more than 40 million viewers every year. The annual New Years Day Concert in Vienna has been a major event for more than seven decades. The resulting recordings with works from the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries are among the classical markets most important releases. In 2014, The Vienna Philharmonic invited Daniel Barenboim to conduct the New Years Concert.

The programme traditionally revolves around waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family (Johann father and son, as well as Josef and Eduard Strauss), including works by other composers of that era. This proven formula blends well-known classics with premieres of works that have never been recorded or are rarely heard—and the result is invariably both joyful and moving.

The Vienna New Year's Concert has a long history, dating back to 31 December 1939. Initially held on the last day of the year, the concert was later moved to 1 January by the Vienna Philharmonic in 1941, establishing a tradition that persists to this day. The list of renowned conductors who have led the Vienna Philharmonic's New Year's Concerts is impressive, featuring great maestros such as Herbert von Karajan, Lorin Maazel, Claudio Abbado, Carlos Kleiber, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Seiji Ozawa, Mariss Jansons and Franz Welser-M?st.

The concert is centered around works by members of the Strauss family – Johann Strauss Father and Son as well as Eduard and Josef Strauss – which have been staples of the media event over the years. Old favorites from their output are featured alongside less familiar pieces that have never been recorded or are seldom heard. These compositions are programmed around two fixed points in the concert: the Blue Danube Waltz and the Radetzky March.

Daniel Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires to Russian Jewish parents. He began taking piano lessons with his mother at the age of five and continued his musical studies with his father. His first official concert was performed in Buenos Aires when he was just seven years old.

In 1952, Barenboim's family moved to Israel, where two years later he was sent to Salzburg to attend conducting classes with Igor Markevitch. In 1955 and 1956, Barenboim spent time studying harmony and composition with French composer Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

From the mid-1960s, Barenboim started dedicating more time to conducting. From 1975 to 1989, he held the position of chief conductor for the Orchestre de Paris, where he frequently performed contemporary works by prominent composers such as Lutoslawski, Berio, Boulez, Henze, Dutilleux, and Takemitsu. It was during this period that he made his opera debut at the Edinburgh Festival in 1973, and his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1981, where over the course of 18 consecutive summers he conducted Tristan und Isolde, The Ring, Parsifal, and Die Meistersinger.

Itzhak Perlman (born Israel, 26 August 1945 – London, England, 27 November 2016) was an American-Israeli pianist and conductor. In 1991, he succeeded Herbert von Karajan as music director of the Chicago Symphony and in 2006 was named “honorary conductor for life”. His tenure at the Chicago Symphony began with a three-year contract in 1983. In 1992, he became general music director of Berlin’s Deutsche Staatsoper and in 2000, the Berlin Staatskapelle appointed him “chief conductor for life”.

He also appears regularly with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Wiener Philharmoniker. In 2007 he began a close relationship with the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, where he conducts opera and concerts as well as playing chamber music. In 2011 he was appointed music director of the legendary Milan institution.

In 1999, together with the late Palestinian-born writer and Columbia University professor Edward Said, Barenboim founded the West-Eastern Divan workshop and orchestra. For his efforts towards reconciliation in the Middle East as well as his musical achievements, Barenboim has been the recipient of many prizes and honours. He previously conducted the New Year’s Concert in 2009.

Barenboim has recorded over forty-five compact disc albums with various orchestras, most notably with the Berlin Philharmonic and its successors (Berlin Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande) since 1965. He has also recorded with other leading symphony orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, and London Philharmonic.

Barenboim has collaborated extensively with numerous composers including Igor Stravinsky, Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, Anton Bruckner, Dmitri Shostakovich, Benjamin Britten and John Cage. He made his debut recording of Stravinsky’s The Rake's Progress under Sir Thomas Beecham in 1963, and is known for his performances of works by Schoenberg and Krzysztof Penderecki among others. He has also made several recordings featuring works by Stravinsky’s assistant, Manuel de Falla.

In addition to his work as a soloist and conductor, Barenboim was a frequent guest performer on American television shows such as PBS’s Great Performances, and served as an artistic advisor on the TV series Star Wars.
