General Preface
Millions of Chinese individuals have been motivated to learn English in order to gain knowledge and communication skills that are essential in today's globalized world, where English has become the primary language for international discourse. However, many English language learners fail to recognize that mastering English also provides them with an easy access to literary classics such as plays by Shakespeare, poems by Shelley, novels by Mark Twain, and works by Nietzsche - all of which are an integral part of liberal arts education.
It is important to note that while universities exist primarily for vocational purposes, i.e., to impart knowledge and skills, their ultimate goal should not be limited to this scope. Rather, they should aim to provide students with a well-rounded education that equips them with the necessary tools to navigate the complexities of modern life.
In conclusion, the study of English language not only enhances the acquisition of professional knowledge but also enables individuals to appreciate the richness and diversity of world literature. Thus, it is crucial for learners of English to realize that mastering this language can open up a vast realm of possibilities both within the academic sphere and beyond.
Today, we find ourselves in an ever-increasingly complex and rapidly changing world. In order to successfully navigate this world, it is not enough to simply possess excellent communication skills; we must also have a deep understanding of cultures outside of our own. One significant aspect of today's global culture involves the increasing exchange and understanding among different nations and peoples. A key way to gain insight into foreign cultures is through reading their literature, particularly their literary classics. These works provide a window into the soul of a country's culture, offering both language proficiency and a sense of transcendence.
It is with great admiration that we congratulate Liaoning People's Publishing House for its foresight and courage in creating new volumes of world literary classics available to the public. We hope that readers who are proficient in English will take advantage of these resources, appreciate them as valuable works of literature, and keep them close throughout their lifetimes.
